GET RID OF PROBLEM VEINS WITH A NEW LASER THERAPY

GET RID OF PROBLEM VEINS WITH A NEW LASER THERAPY

Are ugly or painful veins annoying you? Now, there’s a new high-tech treatment using a laser. We asked The Vein Doctors Group at Miami to explain this cutting-edge remedy.

Vein therapy through lasers
Vein therapy through lasers

Men and women both suffer from problem leg veins, especially as we get older. Getting rid of them is sometimes just an aesthetic choice. But a lot of the time it is better for your health and can relieve pain too. Enter the Vein Doctors Group. They are not a cosmetic clinic.

Laser therapy
This marketing officer has had varicose veins since she was 16 years of age. She had a vein stripping procedure elsewhere, but the veins came back after two years. She had endovenous laser ablation and ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy and returned to work the following day.

This is the real deal. They do not treat veins unless they have performed an ultrasound first. This is to determine what is causing the problem with the veins in question and fixing the underlying problem.

VARICOSE VEINS THERAPY THROUGH LASER

Severe varicose veins can compromise the nutrition of your skin, leading to eczema, inflammation and even ulceration of the lower legs. Varicose veins can also lead to the development of blue veins on the feet and skin discolouration. In extreme cases, untreated varicose veins can lead to Deep Vein Thrombosis – a potential life[1]threatening condition. So let’s get this stuff fixed.

The traditional way to get rid of varicose veins is for surgeons to cut open the leg and pull the veins out. It is called “stripping.” But now, there’s a laser. Endovenous Laser Ablation is used at Vein Doctors Group to treat larger veins. The great thing about Endovenous Laser Ablation is that there is no need for bed rest, inactivity, hospital admission or general anaesthetic.

40% to 80% of patients who have previously had stripping procedures experience recurrence after this procedure. Most phlebologists (vein doctors) don’t strip veins anymore. In fact, Australia is leading the way for minimally invasive modern treatments. Endovenous laser is proving to be much more successful simply because the varicose veins are much more unlikely to come back. The endovenous laser treatments do not leave scars or “nicks” post-procedure – very different to traditional in-hospital stripping.

Case Study 1

This nurse and mother of two had physical symptoms and wanted to remove the veins for cosmetic reasons. She was treated with ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy and microsclerotherapy. She returned to work the next day, and her physical symptoms were relieved.

This rugby union football player and security officer have had varicose veins since 15 years of age associated with leg ulcers. He had endovenous laser ablation and ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy. He returned to work the day after treatment.

SPIDER VEINS THERAPY THROUGH LASER

The Vein Doctors Group see a lot of patients who have just had surface treatment and are dissatisfied with their results because many of the treated veins have returned. At Vein Doctors Group, they do treat spider veins, but they don’t guess where incompetent veins are. They plan treatment from an ultrasound scan and expect an 80-90% improvement 3-6 months after treatment.

TO DO List – Here’s Why You Need to Cross it Off

TO DO List – Here’s Why You Need to Cross it Off

“TO DO” LIST of chores and errands – it could actually provide a variety of health benefits. According to researchers at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine. The study found women over age 65 who engaged in regular light physical activity had a reduction in the risk of mortality.

“Every movement counts,” said Dr Andrea LaCroix. She is a professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health at UC San Diego. “A lot of what we do on a daily basis is improving our health. Such as walking to the mailbox, strolling around the neighbourhood, folding clothes and straightening up the house. Activities like these account for more than 55 per cent of how older individuals get their daily activity.”

Case Study

The 6,000 women in the study, ages 65 to 99, were followed for up to four and a half years. They wore a measuring device called an accelerometer on their hip around the clock for seven days while going about their daily activities. The study found that 30 minutes of light physical activity per day lowered mortality risk by 12 percent while an additional 30 minutes of moderate activity, such as bicycling at a leisurely pace or brisk walking, exhibited a 39 percent lower risk.

'to do' list
Cross off the To-Do List

“Improving levels of physical activity both light and moderate could be almost as effective as rigorous regular exercise at preventing a major chronic disease,” said LaCroix. “We don’t have to be running marathons to stay healthy. The paradigm needs to shift when we think about being active.”

The study also found that the benefit of light physical activity extended to all subgroups examined. It also includes different racial/ethnic backgrounds, obese and non-obese women. It also includes women with high and low functional ability and women older and younger than age 80.

To Sum It All Up

“With the increasing baby boomer population, it is imperative that future health guidelines recommend light physical activity in addition to more strenuous activity,” said LaCroix. “When we get up from the couch and chair and move around, we are making good choices and contributing to our health.” ■

Pets Help Improve Seniors’ Health

Pets Help Improve Seniors’ Health

PETS CAN HELP ELDERLY OWNERS get active, shake off stress, and feel less pain, according to a recent poll.

Only pet owners can truly understand the joy a pet can bring to their lives. Yet according to this poll, pets do more than provide happiness to humans – they bring mental and physical health benefits, too. This is according to the results of the National Poll on Healthy Aging by the University of Michigan. The poll found that 55% of older adults own a pet, with more than three-quarters of respondents saying that having pets reduces their stress and gives them a sense of purpose.

Correlation Between Dogs and Activeness

Two-thirds of pet owners, including 78% of dog owners, also shared that their pet keeps them physically active. Meanwhile, owning pets seemed to even be more beneficial for respondents who said their health was fair or poor, with over 70% saying their pet helps them cope with physical or emotional symptoms. An incredible 46% said that their pets helped them take their mind off the pain.

Mary Janevic, who helped design the poll, said, “Relationships with pets tend to be less complicated than those with humans, and pets are often a source of great enjoyment. They also provide older adults with a sense of being needed and loved.”

Professor Cathleen Connell has studied the role of companion animals in older adults’ lives. “We have long known that pets are a common and naturally occurring source of support.” But aside from taking care of pets, Connell adds that maintaining social connections and activities with friends and family helps improve older people’s quality of life. “Helping older adults find low-cost ways to support pet ownership while not sacrificing other important relationships and priorities is an investment in overall mental and physical health.”

And that is exactly what the AWLQ does! If you are thinking about adopting, then this will surely set your mind at ease. ■

Vertical Retirement Villages are on Trend

Vertical Retirement Villages are on Trend

CHRIS AND GINNY are just two examples of the growing number of retirees who have made the move into The Verge. One of the new vertical retirement villages by RetireAustralia. The vertical community is moments from the sea and has sweeping views over Burleigh Golf Course.

Vertical retirement villages are becoming much more common. Going vertical means that amenities that retirees love, like gyms, cafes, rooftop bbq areas and multipurpose rooms for community activities and social gatherings are just an elevator ride away. Also, seeing as we are living longer, more healthy lives than ever before in history, we have a clear need for fun for a lot longer. Living vertical means that these centres can be placed right in vibrant urban villages, near restaurants, good shopping haunts and cultural centres. The Verge is just three minutes from the beach.

Chris, who describes himself as independent, said he initially thought a retirement community would never be for him. But Ginny changed his mind. “I could see the fact that it was the right decision, I just didn’t want to let go. I think all of us only need to hear about someone else’s misfortune to see how difficult it becomes if you don’t make the decision yourself when you are able and healthy to make it.”

Ginny said it was absolutely the right choice to move to The Verge. “It’s not a nice thought, but if you get sick down the track or have a fall, someone else is making the decision for you. We’ve had the time to be able to think about it and for everybody to get used to the idea. Now, we have everything at our fingertips. It all makes sense.”

Not everyone may need assistance today, but The Verge is five steps ahead regardless. There are wide corridors, lots of storage, natural light, switches and power points at accessible heights, deep showers and reinforced bathroom walls to retrofit railings. These are all built-in without disturbing the aesthetic or sacrificing the comforts of home.

Now that the couple has settled in, they say they haven’t missed yard work and maintaining a house. Says Chris, “I absolutely love not having to mow the lawn. It was the right decision. It frees me up to do the things that really matter to me. And it’s nice to know help is there if we need it.” ■

Three Verge display apartments are available for viewing.
